Alan C. Tindal
Alan Calder Tindal died Feb. 11, 2015 at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor at the age of 93.
He was born Jan. 15, 1922 to John R. and Mable B. (Dubuque) Tindal. He grew up and attended schools in West Springfield, Massachusetts. He was a graduate of Harvard College and Babson Institute. In 1944, he married Barbara Brackett of Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
During World War II, he was a B-29 pilot in the United States Army Air Corps. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, and the Purple Heart. He spent his business career in radio and television broadcasting serving as president of WSPR in Springfield, Massachusetts, and vice president of Channel 22 Television in Springfield. Upon retirement from station management, he joined Blackburn & Company as a media broker.
Alan loved the outdoors, particularly golf, paddle tennis, gardening, and hiking many of the Appalachian and Metacomet-Monadnock trails with Barbara. Both he and Barbara enjoyed downhill skiing. Alan was very passionate about the sport, skiing well into his eighties, regularly at Okemo Mountain in Vermont. He also took a special interest in the dwarf conifers and day lilies that filled their Longmeadow yard.
He was very fond of the family’s summer home on Squirrel Island in Maine, and spent many happy vacations there with family and friends. In 2009, he and Barbara moved to St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor, where he cultivated new skills in woodworking, providing his family with lasting treasures.
He is survived by his three children, Douglas and his wife Gail of Acton, Massachusetts, Bruce and his wife Nancy of Boothbay, and Andrea of Henniker, New Hampshire. He was particularly proud of his five grandchildren, Claire Tindal, Elizabeth Tindal, Alexandra Tindal Pinkham and her husband Timothy, Jonathan Tindal and his wife Jessica, and Lea Stevenson; and his great–grandson, Henry Pinkham.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank all the people who work at St. Andrews Village for the compassionate care Alan received while there.
