Boothbay man arrested for Barters Island home invasion
Lincoln County Sheriff's Office arrested 57-year-old Michael Brewer of Boothbay April 4 in connection with the home invasion of Frank and Alice Schambra's Barters Island residence March 17.
Frank Schambra said he was relieved to hear the news of one suspect's arrest. “It's been tough living with the thought that they may return. They were brazen to begin with. We don't have a comfort level that this won't happen again, so this is kind of a step in the right direction.”
The arrest comes nearly three weeks after three suspects broke into the residence while Frank and Alice Schambra were home. The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of money and jewelry, and escaped from police in the night.
Lincoln County Sheriff's Office obtained a warrant for Brewer's arrest after culminating multiple interviews and examining DNA evidence from the crime scene.
After being picked up from his Matthew Road residence, Brewer was transported to Two Bridges Regional Jail, where he is currently being held. His bail is set at $30,000, according to Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
Lieutenant Michael Murphy said no items from the March 17 robbery were recovered during the arrest, and no information of the other suspects involved is available as of April 5, 2013.
In the weeks leading up to the arrest, Schambra said he was impressed in the way the law enforcement has handled the case. “It was almost if it was personal for them,” he said.
The Schambras moved from New York to Boothbay five years ago to settle down as year-round residents. Schambra said he had become complacent with the sense of security in a retirement community in Maine.
“Part of it is our fault. Like other people, we just don't lock our doors, and that's not a smart move.”
Since the incident, the Schambras have set up an alarm system in their house with Northeast Security.
The case is currently ongoing and any person with information of the crime is advised to contact Detective Ron Rollins or Detective Terry Michaud at 207-882-7332.
