Kinetic sculptures mesmerize at botanical gardens

The kinetic sculptures of award-winning artist George Sherwood mesmerize and enchant as they move with each breath of wind. These abstract pieces are inspired by nature, and are evocative of flocks of birds, schools of fish, shimmering leaves and waves of light or water. Created using brilliant stainless steel, Sherwood’s dynamic sculptures reflect light and animate their setting.

“Each sculpture is a three-dimensional painting of shifting light, drawing all the colors of the environment, pulling down the sky, drawing up the earth and gathering everything in between,” Sherwood said.

Sited at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens and curated by June LaCombe, the “Wind, Waves & Light” exhibition enthralls and fascinates among thousands of native and exotic plants and acres of stunning ornamental gardens. This exhibition is comprised of 12 pieces in a variety of sizes; from the bewitching “Wind Orchid” that twists on the Great Lawn and Ledge Garden, to the mesmerizing “Flock of Birds” that dances in the air outside of the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses, to the whimsical “Turns” that spins in the Slater Forest Pond, these pieces are not to be missed.

The exhibition runs now through Oct. 12 at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, with an opening reception on June 24 and an artist talk on July 18.

The Gardens is located at 132 Botanical Gardens Drive in Boothbay. For more information about the Gardens, visit www.mainegardens.org or call 207-633-8000.

Sherwood has degrees in both art and engineering. When asked why he chose sculpture as an art form, he responds that he “appreciates the freedom of space with no restrictions, no limits.”
