Meet the new Boosters
Forget the letter jackets and football uniforms.
The new Boosters Club has graduated to more than just sports. They’re picking up paint brushes, studying math equations and costuming themselves in support of all art, academic and sports organizations at Boothbay Region High School.
But the group’s mission isn’t all that’s different; they are now immersed in new technologies, which board president Heather O’Brien discussed in an October meeting.
As the group talked about updating and approving its bylaws, O’Brien shared how they would vote on board matters by email, in many cases.
Another board member, Tracy Smith, flipped through her iPad as the meeting progressed. In addition to the board’s governing, the Boosters have begun using technology in promotional and fundraising efforts as well.
“The step into the social media world and keeping up with the latest in technology has been an exciting move for the BRBC this year,” O’Brien wrote in an email. “The (new) website www.boothbayregionbooster.com, was launched in September of 2013 and promotes the schedules, events and school news.
In the email, O’Brien said the group’s Facebook page has been used to share upcoming events and communicate with volunteers.
The board is made up of members who are parents with children in BRHS or BRES. That connection looms large in O’Brien’s commitment to the board. “Call me being nostalgic, but watching my oldest daughter step foot into BRHS this year brought on a sense of excitement for me,” O’Brien wrote. “It reminded me of my high school days at BRHS, homecoming, dances, sports, Student Council, volunteering and of course, studying.
“It was a reminder of how participating in these extracurricular programs helped build my confidence, develop teamwork and people skills, and created a lot of great memories.”
During the meeting, board member Elizabeth Barter made a similar comment. She pointed to her and her husband’s own years at the high school and being supported by the Boosters. “It’s time to give back,” Barter said.
