Petition highlights speed woes
Angelo Pappagallo didn't mind knocking on a few doors.
It was almost fun, he told the Newcastle Board of Selectmen on Monday, Jan. 13.
Pappagallo, of Newcastle, spoke Monday about the petition he went door-to-door to have signed by more than 50 residents about the speed on Sheepscot Road.
“This is a quality of life issue,” Pappagallo said. “Our petition isn't just about speed, signage and safety; it really is a quality of life issue.”
Pappagallo spoke about the hairpin turn on Sheepscot Road, near the Sheepscot Valley Conservation Association, where truckers frequently drive, sometimes too quickly.
“There is a really disproportionate number of trucks on the road,” he said. “And it's because of the weight limited bridge in Wiscasset.”
One suggestion was to lower the speed limit, but all speed limit adjustments must be approved by the Maine Department of Transportation. Other suggestions from the half-dozen Sheepscot Road residents included adding a radar speed sign, to posting a sheriff’s deputy to try and slow traffic.
The board said it would write to Sen. Chris Johnson, Rep. Mick Devin and the Maine Department of Transportation to try and broker a meeting to have something done about the road.
“We'd love to have our elected officials advocate on our behalf,” Pappagallo said. “It's hazardous; people zoom into Sheepscot Village.”
Pappagallo said it wasn't the truckers fault; because of weight restrictions on a Wiscasset bridge, truckers are sometimes forced to go through Sheepscot Village.
