Rotary, YMCA basketball tournaments this weekend
There's lots of basketball still to be played this season and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, March 7-9, the Boothbay Region YMCA and Boothbay Region Elementary School will host the annual boys and girls junior high (grades 7 and 8) tournaments.
For 40 years, the Boothbay Harbor Rotary Club has hosted the annual girls tournament at BRES. This year's tournament, featuring eight teams, will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday. The opening round match-ups in the double elimination tournament are: Boothbay 7 vs. Mariners 7 at 4 p.m.; Oceanside 8 vs. Lincoln 8 at 5:30 p.m.; Freeport vs. Boothbay 8 at 7 p.m.; and Oceanside 7 vs. Oak Hill on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The girls tournament will finish at the YMCA on Sunday with games at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The YMCA Classic boys tournament, also double elimination, has been running for 35 years. The 2014 edition will feature 12 teams. The opening round begins Friday at 4 p.m. with Boothbay 7 taking on Bristol. Other games in the bracket frames are: Oak Hill vs. Hall-Dale on Friday at 5:30 p.m.; Medomak 7 vs. Boothbay 8 at 7 p.m.; Lewiston vs. Richmond at 8:30 p.m.; Medomak 8 vs. Lincoln at 8 a.m. at BRES (new set-up this year); and Auburn vs. China at 9:15 a.m. at BRES.
“With the girls tournament only featuring eight teams, we had a chance to showcase a couple of boys teams at BRES while also giving the girls a chance to play at the YMCA again on Sunday, which we have done for the past few years,” said Neal Verge, a long-time coordinator of the tournaments.
Concessions will be sold at both locations and daily admission is charged at both tournaments.
That's 14 girls games and 22 boys games over three days — get your fill of basketball at the YMCA and BRES this weekend.
