Two fatalities reported in Boothbay car crash
Two people died in a single vehicle car crash on the Wiscasset Road in Boothbay Sept. 5.
Investigation at the crash scene revealed the vehicle, a GMC Envoy sport utility vehicle, was traveling north at a high rate of speed when the operator lost control. The vehicle left the right side of the road traveled down a ditch before striking an embankment which caused the vehicle to go airborne. The vehicle then flipped in the air, striking a utility pole and several trees before coming to rest on its roof. Both occupants were wearing their seatbelts and perished in the crash.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Department is waiting to notify family members before identifying the victims. A witness reported the vehicle had Connecticut plates and had several items packed into the vehicle.
Rescue personnel requested a LifeFlight helicopter, but that call was later canceled. Rescue personnel later covered the vehicle with a blue tarp after removing two occupants.
Witnesses also say they saw a small dog emerge from the vehicle. Betsy Pratt, an animal control officer, took the dog to the Boothbay Animal Hospital. The animal hospital reported that the dog had recieved a head wound, but was in stable condition as of 3:55 p.m.
The primary investigating officer is Deputy First Class Brian Collamore. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. Deputy Chad Gilbert is conducting a reconstruction of the crash and Lt. Michael Murphy did a forensic mapping of the scene. Members of the Boothbay Fire, Boothbay Harbor Fire and Boothbay Region Ambulance Service also responded. Route 27 was closed for approximately three hours while the investigation was being conducted.
