We're number 2!
The Boothbay Register and its sister paper, the Wiscasset Newspaper, were each judged second best in the General Excellence category in the Maine Press Association's 2012 Better Newspaper Contest, as announced at the MPA's annual conference held in Freeport October 13.
The Mount Desert Islander took top General Excellence honors in the Register's division (Weekly 2, 4,000-plus circulation) in which there were eight entries, and the York County Coast Star won the Wiscasset Newspaper's division (Weekly 1, less than 4,000 circulation), in which six newspapers entered. General Excellence is one of the most coveted awards in the MPA contest as it represents the judge's opinion of the overall quality of the newspaper: news content; advertising; layout and more. Three issues of each newspaper are judged, two of predetermined dates and one of each newspaper's choosing.
The two local newspapers also won several other awards.
The Register took third place in Advertising General Excellence and columnist Robert Mitchell took second place in the Scenic Photo category for his photo of Boothbay Harbor's footbridge.
Mary Dodge Brewer inducted into MPA Hall of Fame
The highlight of the day-long event for the newspapers' staffs was the induction of former managing editor Mary Dodge Brewer into the Maine Press Association's Hall of Fame during the luncheon. More than 40 staff members, family members and friends attended the ceremony. Editor Kevin Burnham gave the brief introduction speech. At the conclusion of his speech, the group stood up, cheered and held up signs (unbeknownst to Mary!) touting “Hail Mary.” She thanked everyone and said “spending 50 years doing something you love isn't really called work.”
A plaque outlining Mary's outstanding career was presented to her by MPA President Mike Dowd. A duplicate plaque will be hung at the University of Maine where the Hall of Fame display is located. Brewer and former Waterville Sentinel managing editor Ann B. McGowan were inducted into the MPA Hall of Fame, which now has 54 members.
