Electronic sign slows down Southport’s Cross Road traffic

Cross Road traffic in Southport is significantly slower due a giant electronic sign flashing ”Slow down!”

On July 31, Selectman Gerry Gamage encountered Russell Jones after a board meeting. Jones wanted to complain about a recent incident on Cross Road. “A guy in a pick-up was driving like a maniac on the Cross Road. He passed our house about seven times driving over 80 miles per hour. We live close to the road and I didn’t want my wife to get T-boned backing out,” Russell Jones said Aug. 16 retelling Southport selectmen about the incident.

On Aug. 1, Gamage contacted Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett about the resident’s concern. A couple days later, one of four Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department electronic signs arrived on Cross Road with a message: “Slow Down, Speed Limit 35 MPH, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department.”

On Aug. 16, Jones attended the selectmen’s meeting to express his gratitude. “The sign’s been there for almost two weeks. It’s working, and I wanted to tell you all how much I appreciated this,” he said.

In other action, selectmen renewed Robinson’s Wharf’s Class I, II, III and IV liquor license. Selectmen also approved a special amusement license for Lincoln Arts Festival to host a musical concert on Aug. 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hodgdon Yachts. Selectmen also approved Julia Latter’s Oct. 6 town hall rental for a baby shower.

Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 21 in the town hall.
