Friendships bloom at Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library
During their March meeting, I had the privilege of attending the “I Love A Mystery” book club which is excellently led by retired librarian and longtime BHML circulation volunteer, Shirley Sirois. Shirley and members of the club welcomed me warmly and were more than happy to respond to some questions I had for them about their ties to the library.
Members get to know one another on a deeper level through stories they share which organically arise during their discussions on a novel. For one member, this group was her introduction to the community as she joined the group shortly after retiring here. For Shirley, conducting this book club gives her purpose.
During our discussion, the overarching theme that kept coming to the fore was that this book club is about more than books, but about the sometimes challenging conversations about humanity the books uncover, and the meaningful friendships which have been forged through these talks. Members of the club appreciate that the monthly choice of book broadens their reading horizons, as well as the rotating display in the library’s entry window, often inspired by a holiday or awareness month.
When asked if being part of this group changed their connection to the library or town, most emphatically agreed that it enhances their connections across other activities and groups, developing acquaintance relationships and long lasting friendships.
Another book club forging strong bonds is Moms Night In. “Some of my most meaningful friendships and interactions are because of our library,” says member Gigi Eleyet-DeLisle, “Getting to know other mothers in our book club has helped me to feel accepted and less alone in my parenting journey. This group has helped me be a better parent and take time out for myself. I love that I’m also modeling for my children a love for reading and being a part of the community.”
Another member of Moms Night in, Sarah Meyers, shared, “I couldn’t imagine my time here without our library. I appreciate the camaraderie, the people around me who truly enjoy my presence, their support, and to feel heard. I feel fulfilled and like a part of me is complete since I moved here.”
When asked what this group added to her life that she wouldn’t have otherwise, Moms Night In member Jenn Hyson shared, “Time for just me with women who get the unique stage I am at in my life. I was looking for something just for me as my kids have gotten older and I found this. It’s been a great fit, mixing my love of books with my life.”
Another member, Conxa Packard would like to share this with our wider community: “The Library isn’t just about books. It can be a catalyst in creating broader community networks that can make our community more resilient to shocks and changes.”
Boothbay Harbor Memorial Library’s mission is to create a welcoming space in which to explore ideas, foster community, and nurture individual growth through open access to the tools to learn, dream, connect, and do. Come on in!
Happy National Library Week!
