The archipelago (a group of islands) in the Sheepscot River offers the viewer, a veritable visual variety of delight. From large to small, inhabited to uninhabited, these islands stand in dark contrast to the sky above and the water around. Surrounded by ledge along their shores, these island interiors are often filled with trees. Evidence of the life cycle on display; stark, dead silhouettes of once tall tree trunks are surrounded by soft, new growth. A new generation, seeded and now fed by fallen ancestors.

As the observer circling the islands, there is a noticeable shift in the contours. Living features are determined by the amount of ledge, rock that prevents or dwarfs new growth. The more fertile pockets contain the rich soil of generations of island flora, and of course, the abandoned droppings of ever present sea birds. The islands are defined by their history with the wind, the sea and the sun.

This new series of oil paintings by John MT Seitzer are visualizations of the Islands in the Sheepscot River. Observations depicting cloudy skies, reflections of a setting sun, and river waters mirroring what you see, doubling the delight. The paint colors fluctuate from dull in the shadows to scintillating as you look up towards the setting sun.

Some of you will know and recognize these islands, having sailed around them for years. Others may experience them on dry land in the gallery without even getting on a boat.

You are invited to come to Joy To The Wind Gallery, 34 Atlantic Ave. in Boothbay Harbor, and experience the new paintings for yourself. This exhibit will be featured June 1-30. The gallery is open daily 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. For more information, call 207-633-7025 or visit joytothewind.com.
