McKown and Juniper Points: Lobster bake recap

Mon, 07/08/2024 - 8:30am

Wow! What a lobster bake! Chairs Jean Dilley and Cindy Gagne should hire out as weather forecasters for special events. Despite ominous clouds, fog rolling in and out all day and wavering weather app reports, they and Jim Dilley and the cooking crew were sure the rain would hold off. Indeed it was perfect weather by 5 o’clock when over 200 lobster ticket holders flooded Whitten’s field. Every single JPVIS table and chair was in use. 66 hot dog tickets were also sold, reflecting the number of younger ones present (and some adults who ate both). The dessert table was especially bountiful this year. Remember when it was just donuts? Many many thanks to all the volunteers.

What are your memories and family stories about storms and the devastation they left behind on Juniper and McKown Points?  There was Hurricane Carol in August of 1954, the nor’easter of February 1978, the back-to-back storms this past January.  Any others?  Come to this month’s storytelling session; bring your photos, your recollections to the Community House next Wednesday, July 17, starting at 7 p.m. We have lots of storm stories to share with each other. Kit Andrews will facilitate.

Peter Edwards notes that “The Edwards cottage came to lfe on July 6 when Christina and family returned to Juniper Point after an amazing 3 month adventure where the family visited something like 15 countries. Her husband orchestrated the trip which makes one's head spin with the many reservations, and travel arrangements that were required. He will be arriving a week after Christina. Julie Edwards will be enjoying some Juniper Point time as well, with her new puppy pug, Stuart.”

The belle of the ball this past week was Tyne Ellis Hanley, the 3-month-old daughter of Sean Hanley and Katie Fleming of Brooklyn New York. She attended many events, including the lobster bake, and I never heard a peep, even with all the toe squeezing from her admirers. Proud grandparents are Tom and Kathy Hanley (née Helm).

Dave reports on tennis: We have lots to recap from the 4th of July week week as the tennis courts came alive. Triples and BYOBurger night offered high energy fun to lead off the week.  Congrats to Emily Whiting, her son-in-law John, and Aaron Bloom for earning the Upper Courts Champions title and to Eric and Annie Hilmo, and Bob Flory for winning the Lower Courts Champions title.

Our Junior Match vs BHYC was a success with Alex Ross, George Himes, Edie Himes, Sawyer Hilmo, Katherine Taylor, Xavier Morrison, Lucas Swan, Ben Lewis, and Finn Lewis representing us well in singles and doubles play.  JPVIS earned more wins this time but we all enjoyed seeing so many talented juniors competing on the Juniper Point tennis courts.

The Parent-Child Tournament on Independence Day was a blast. Six teams competed in the Advanced Division with Edie Himes and Azhar Meyer earning the most games won!  In the Green Ball division Van Deegler and his grandson Owen were the Champs after a couple hours of competitive doubles.
