McKown and Juniper Points: Meeting, mini golf, ice cream and more

Mon, 07/29/2024 - 11:15am

Somehow it’s already August. McKown Pointers can hear the yacht club cannon go off at sunset each evening; its now booming closer to 8 than 8:30, a somber reminder that the days are becoming shorter. At Firefly cottage we’ve had a mid-summer boost with a successful new hummingbird feeder (a heavy canning jar variety that doesn’t blow sideways in the wind) and a sweet Junco nesting on three eggs in a hanging plant.

JPVIS President Anne Markette led a productive and upbeat annual meeting last Saturday morning, starting right at 9:30 and ending a scant hour later. Fond goodbyes and thank yous (and hats and T-shirts) were given to outgoing board members Peter Edwards, Lee Corbin, Wade Judge and Dave Kynor.  Welcomed were new board members Sarah Barton, Ingrid Kiefer, Chris Kurz and Amy Whitten. Many thanks to these members who keep our association strong.

Don’t be alarmed if you see fire trucks outside the Community House this Sunday evening during the Juniors’ ice cream social. Mary Fleming Kowalski has organized a JPVIS wide event for Sunday at 6:30 that everyone is encouraged to join: fire trucks and ice cream sundaes! Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor firefighters will be here for fire safety demonstrations, including use of fire extinguishers, how to check smoke and CO2 detectors and building a safe campfire. We will be able to explore the fire trucks as well as the fire equipment that the firefighters use. They will explain how households should be prepared for a fire emergency and will have helpful handouts. We will put out a “boot” to collect cash donations. The firefighters are there for us during an emergency, so let’s be there for them and thank them with donations, small and large, so they can upgrade and add new equipment.

Dave reports on tennis and Junior activities: Dolphin Mini Golf last week was a blast with an amazing turnout of families from Juniper Point enjoying the course and the ice cream! Congratulations to our Junior Tournament competitors for their amazing sportsmanship and skill!  The Girls Doubles Champions were Annabelle Lewis and Emily Fish and the Finalists were Shai Mitzafon and Katherine Taylor.  The Girls Singles Champion was Emily and the Finalist was Annabelle.  In Boys Doubles our Champions were Alex Ross and Lucas Swan and the Finalists were George Himes and Ben Lewis.  Alex was the Champion of the singles and George was the Finalist.  We also hosted Christmas Cove in a Junior Interclub match on Friday with over two dozen kids playing doubles and singles.  The final score showed the home team as victorious but all had a wonderful afternoon of high level point play. (Editor’s note: Dave is modest. We won!).

It’s Breakfast at the Courts on Saturday morning at 9 with pancakes and a tennis exhibition which may rival the Olympics! Don’t forget to come with a donation to offset the costs of breakfast.

Joan reports that many JPVIS members and guests (ages 20 somethings to over 80s) have participated on Thursday mornings at 10 for some Movin’, Groovin’, and Chilling movement classes with Joan Phibbs.  Joan and Hugh need to head south for a few weeks to finalize some family business and Hugh (with son Liam) are heading to Japan, so classes will have to be  put on hold for a few weeks in August – starting Aug. 1. Class will resume at the end of the month and continue into September.  If you haven’t tried the class stay tuned – there are more classes to come! Come get energized, stretched and grounded!   BTW..There is no charge.

For even more movin’ and groovin’ Christie Gillies, granddaughter of John and Patti Gillies and Judy Engle will be joining the band The Ruckus at Mine Oyster on Friday night, Aug. 9. Everyone is invited to come out and listen to some great funk music! The Ruckus hails from Manhattan and will feature Katie Oberholtzer from The Band Capitol on vocals. Christie will make appearances on drums and Christie’s boyfriend Eli is featured on trombone. Let’s pack the house and cheer them on 8-11 p.m. at Mine Oyster upstairs! You can check out @theruckuslive and @katieobiejazz on Instagram.
