We’ve all been waiting for summer on Southport and it finally arrived last week! The sailing program is in full swing and the Junior Officers held the first Ice Cream Social of the season. A cool and breezy day Saturday brought intense competition to the turnabout races. Rain arrived Saturday evening at the same time as 120 members of the SYC Family gathered for the Commodore’s Opening Reception. There was a smorgasbord of appetizers in the Senior Building with beverages below in the Junior Building. All ages were well represented, including a lemonade stand run by some entrepreneurial young sailors. The weather did not dampen our spirits!

The week ahead includes Fourth of July festivities and a busy weekend. The SYC Member Meeting will be held on Saturday morning, July 6 at 10 a.m. All are invited to attend. Saturday afternoon is the Firecracker Turnabout Race at 1 p.m. An opportunity for a rematch! Come join the fun - all ages are welcome.

Sunday, July 7 is the Club Cruise to Spectacle Island. Sail, row, paddle or putt your boat. Pack your picnic and join us between noon and 2 p.m. Anchor on the East side of the Island and we can help you get ashore. Plan to get your feet wet as you wade the last few steps. It will be a relaxed time to enjoy lunch and explore the island with friends. Monday and Tuesday are also busy. Monday starts with Coffee on the Deck at 9 a.m. as new students take the swim test. Monday evening at 7 p.m. is the first Book Club of the season, with a discussion of “The Women” by Kristin Hannah. Bring a beverage and join us for conversation and a view of sunset over Cozy Harbor. Member Brunch returns to SYC on Tuesday morning at 10:30 for a tasty potluck. These informal member gatherings are back by popular demand.
