Sprucewold Column: Beach, meetings and more

Tue, 07/30/2024 - 8:45am

Firewise Chipping Day was postponed last week due to a machinery malfunction but co chairs, Randy Lehman and Curt Audin, rescheduled for a new date, Monday, July 29. The chipper could be heard at work and there will be a report at the annual meeting this weekend. Thank you to all the volunteers who keep us proactive regarding fire safety.

It has been a joy to go to the beach this summer and see more families with the next generations making new friends and playing in the sand and waves. Hermit crabs of all sizes and shell shapes abound as well as rock crabs and green crabs. Common periwinkles and waved whelks are the most common snails, but the little kids seem to prefer catching hermit crabs. Mussels and soft shelled clams are along the rocks and in the sand and mud but in recent decades no sand dollars like we used to find. Many years we lose sand over the winter, but this year more sand was left by the winter storms extending from the seawall almost to the swim dock making a more pleasant walk at low tide instead of the mudflats!

Sprucewold Beach Club rules and recommendations revisited: to maximize the enjoyment of all at the beach please remember no radios or streaming music unless you are alone on the beach. Also, please remind your renters to sign in at the kiosk and that the kayaks are all privately owned. All dinghies on the dock are also privately owned and should only be used with owner permission.

Looking for entertainment? Don’t forget the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor. We recently attended the concert of multi-Grammy award winner Patty Griffin, who was wonderful. She told us that she originally hails from Old Town but now lives in Texas. Looking forward to seeing Garrison Keillor next, I still miss Prairie Home Companion. Sprucewold’s own Annaliese Neff created the branding package for the Opera House at Boothbay Harbor: logos, signs, and all.

With all the building going on or planned in our community, a question has come up concerning the log cabins in Sprucewold. To my knowledge the only area here that has covenants for keeping the original log cabin structure is Linekin Heights, it is listed in our deeds.

The 2024-2025 Sprucewold directories are here and will be available at the annual meetings. One directory per cabin, please. Jason Denby did a wonderful job using early 1930’s photos of Sprucewold Lodge Annex (present day lodge) and 25 Bayberry Road on the front cover. On the back cover is a photograph of the Sprucewold shoreline that appears to be taken from Harbor Heights Road. Thank you Jason for taking on this task and doing it so well!

Annual meetings are this weekend, Aug. 3 at 9 a.m. for Linekin Heights and at 10 a.m. the Sprucewold Association on Linekin Green. The Sprucewold Beach Club will meet on Aug. 10 at 9 a.m. at Our Lady Queen of Peace hall. If you cannot attend please contact your group to get a proxy for the meeting. Business cannot be conducted if a quorum is not met. This is not usually a problem, we have an enthusiastic membership!

Don’t forget the annual Community Potluck Supper on Aug. 3 at 5 p.m. on Linekin Green. Beverages are provided and we always look forward to the fabulous food created by all the Sprucewold cabin cooks. All are welcome!

There will be a display on the shed of the town maps of Sprucewold where we can explore the rights of way between all cabins and roadways. We have several members who are interested in trimming branches and brush along the rights of way and we can get together to plan on Saturday evening.
