Update: Nancy Prisk, chairman of the Southport Broadband Committee, said Friday morning that the committee was scheduled to meet with the selectmen on April 13, not April 6, which is why committee members did not attend the selectmen’s meeting.

Original post: An elevator repairman costs how much? This is a question Southport officials are asking themselves after receiving a bill for repairing Southport Memorial Library’s elevator. Last month, Stanley Elevator replaced a $10 part for a total cost of $1,510. “That’s $389 per hour,” Selectman Gerry Gamage said. He announced the repair cost during the April 6 selectmen’s meeting.

In another surprise, selectmen received a Maine Department of Transportation notification for inspecting Joe’s Island Bridge. Surprise No. 1 is Joe’s Island Bridge is no longer the official name. Its name has been Pratts Island Bridge for decades. Selectmen were also surprised the state wanted to inspect a municipally owned bridge. “It’s our bridge. I’m not sure why they want to inspect it,” Gamage said. Selectmen reported they didn’t know of any problems with the structure.

After the board meeting, selectmen planned on participating in a meeting with the broadband committee. Selectmen agreed to hold a public hearing so consultant Axiom Technologies President Mark Ouellette could update the project’s progress and funding. The meeting was scheduled for 6 p.m., but no broadband committee members attended.

Selectmen meet next at 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 13 in the town hall.
