The Southport Memorial Library is pleased to show case the paintings of the late Tony van Hasselt in May and June. Known as a plein air artist and teacher of art, his works are brought to the Library by his wife, Janis van Hasselt. See the works of this internationally-known,celebrated artist, May 7 - June 29.

Tony grew up in Holland and worked in display and graphic design prior to arrival in the USA. Furthering his education in New York, he studied under Frank Reilly, a popular teacher at the New York Art Students League. Watercolorists such as John Pike, Edgar A.Whitney, Robert E.Wood and Tom Hill became his mentors.

Van Hasselt's teaching career began at the Philbrick Museum School in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was guest instructor at West Texas State University, and a faculty member of the University of Oklahoma’s International Training Program.

He was a signature member of the American Watercolor Society. He participated in national shows and won awards in state and regional exhibits. His works have been featured in magazines such as Southwest Art and American Artist, as well of the covers of Artist's magazine and Watercolor Magic.

Painting exclusively in watercolor, van Hasselt taught landscape painting in the US and abroad. He was an active participant of the Boothbay Art Colony, an exhibiting member of the Boothbay Region Art Foundation, and The Maine Art Gallery. This summer, Tony's paintings will be the focus of a solo show at Studio 53 (where his work can always available), following his show in Southport during May and June.

Southport Memorial Library is at 1032 Hendricks Hill Road. Library hours are Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with additional evening hours Thursdays, 6-8 p.m.
