BRHS boys tennis team holds awards ceremony
The Boothbay Region High School boys tennis team, which was the 2023 Mountain Valley Conference champions and finished with an overall record of 10-2, celebrated its successful season with an awards ceremony and potluck supper Monday, June 12 in the school library.
Coach Mark Gorey talked about the “fun” season, and handed out awards to each player after noting the highlights of the season and the players.
Gorey also explained the team’s “Moxie” theme, explaining that one of the synonyms of moxie is tenacity, which exemplified the Seahawks’ season. The first-ever Moxie award, a tennis racket made with the school’s 3D printer, was awarded to freshman Griffin Yereance, who played second singles, for his “refuse to lose” play.
Gorey thanked the parents for their support and the players for a fine season.
First singles player, sophomore Cleyton Splaine, was awarded the team’s most valuable player plaque. Splaine was also named to the MVC’s first team all-star team for the second straight year.
The team’s coach’s award was presented to freshman Harry Hinckley for sticking with the team after an early season injury. He attended every practice and match and took care of the scorebook, said Gorey.
Junior Andrew Fowlie received the team’s most improved player plaque, with Gorey citing that he moved from doubles to playing third singles.
Yereance and Sawyer Blake were named to the MVC’s second team all-star team and Fowlie and Rodi Mayne received honorable mention on the MVC all-star team.
Overall players’ records for the season were: Splaine (7-5), Yereance (10-2), Fowlie (6-0 third singles, 4-0 second doubles), Blake (3-2 third singles, 2-2 second doubles), Neal Baldwin (7-4 first doubles), Mayne (7-4 first doubles), and Chase Mansfield (7-2 second doubles).
“I am pleased that this young team was able to experience MVC Championship glory this year; the core group of sophomores has two more years to ascend to new heights!" said Gorey.
