With August in full swing, we are savoring the last weeks of summer with our favorite events of August. Saturday’s Annual Meeting was well-attended. The exciting part of the meeting was the announcement of new board members and Rear Commodore. We appreciate all who have been of service to our club and welcome new voices to our leadership. Thank you for taking SYC into the next 100 years of community and boating on the Sheepscot!

On Saturday afternoon we held our annual Hendricks Head Open race. We had some really nice sailing conditions with a steady southerly breeze. In total there were five boats each representing a different class. We had a 26' J80, 23' Sonar, 26' Colgate, 19' Rhodes and a 14' 420. In the end the adjusted times seemed to work in the favor of the smaller boats. In first place was Rachel and Nathan Phippen on the 420, in second place was Oliver, Kelley and Dane Phippen on the Rhodes 19 and in 3rd place was Pete Smith, Lowell Watson, and Gretchen Kinsey on the J80. A special thanks to Dave Smith for volunteering for being a mark boat.

Past Commodore Geoff Chatterton facilitates our annual Beer Tasting which has become a highlight of the summer. As member Dave Smith stated:” Every year Geoff makes his own brew. Although he features quite a few good beers, in my experience his home brews are consistently the best. Will Keller brought a couple of guests who are visiting from Munich. They sampled Geoff’s home brew and gave it a big thumbs up!!” Thank you to Team Geoff and Joan Chatterton for hosting another wonderful event.

This is the last week of the sailing program for the summer of 2024. Friday night is our Sailing Jr. Banquet. All Sailors, SYC sailing community, family and friends are invited to this free event at Town Hall to celebrate the 2024 season. We will have Awards, Ice Cream Sundaes and a cup for everyone to take home and remember the summer. Please RSVP to Nancy Doyle: nancy@thenutshellmilton.com with a total number of attendees for your family.

To close out the summer, on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 6 p.m., our Commodore Anne Grimes Rand invites you to the Commodores Closing reception. Everyone is welcome to come and celebrate the summer of 2024 and catch up with friends before many leave for home. Please bring an appetizer to share. Our opening party had such a vast array of choices- absolutely no one went home hungry!
