It has been a rough week for the Boothbay Region High School baseball team. Four back-to-back losses could have clipped the Seahawks’ wings for a chance to make it to the tournament, according to coach Ed Crocker.

The Seahawks are now 4-7 for the season and ninth of 11 in the Class D South Heal point standings. The top eight teams go to the playoffs.

“We have some tough games coming up,” Crocker said, noting Hall-Dale and Madison, both in Class C. With five games left, he said, “it really is Telstar and the teams below us are going to have to help us. It's plain simple.”

May 15, Boothbay took a heartbreaking 10-7 home loss to Maranacook after a two-run lead headed into the seventh inning.

Boothbay’s Casey Phelps and Liam Jacobs each scored two runs while Shawn Gamage and Maddox Cusumano each scored one. Sam Markowitz, Dominick Dow, Finn Harkins, Aidric Canada, Gamage, Cusumano and Phelps each had a hit. The Black Bears had nine hits total.

By the end of the sixth inning, the Seahawks led 5-3. The Black Bears responded with a crushing seven-run inning, including a run at the umpires’ discretion.

“We had a good first five innings, (they) were excellent. We were making the plays, and then we have those bad innings where (we have) walks and errors, and it leads to runs,” Crocker said. “That's been the story of our season.”

Flipping up their rally caps, the Seahawks buckled down at the bottom of the seventh inning, and Cusumano and Jacobs each scored a run. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Maranacook catcher ended the game, nabbing a pop hit from Markowitz.

Boothbay had four errors and Maranacook had three. The Seahawks struck out 12 times and had six earned runs with seven walks.

Jacobs, Canada and Phelps pitched for Boothbay, with a combined eight strikeouts. They allowed four earned runs and six walks.

“Liam pitched a solid six innings,” Crocker said, adding they took him out because he ran out of pitches. “He's one of the best pitchers in the league. I mean, he's throwing 80 miles an hour.”

May 14, Boothbay took a crushing 0-10 loss at Monmouth.

Boothbay had no hits and two errors in the five-inning game.

Gamage, Phelps and Henry Putnam took the mound for Boothbay. Combined, they threw three strikeouts and allowed five walks and eight earned runs. Boothbay struck out eight times and had one walk.

May 13, Winthrop beat the Seahawks 5-2 at Boothbay.

Winthrop opened the game with a run in the first. The Seahawks waited until the fifth inning to respond with their first run, but the Ramblers took another two. In the sixth inning, Winthrop scored two runs and Boothbay scored one.

Gamage and Harkins each scored a run and two hits each. Jacobs and Cusumano each had one hit.

Harkins pitched for Boothbay the entire game with 12 strikeouts. He allowed two earned runs and no walks. The Seahawks struck out 14 times with one walk.

May 10, Mount View beat Boothbay 5-2 at home.

Harkins and Markowitz each scored a run. Harkins, Canada, Jacobs and Gamage each had a hit.

Combined, Jacobs and Harkins pitched 10 strikeouts and allowed five walks and four earned runs. The Seahawks struck out 17 times, had a walk and two earned runs. They had one error and Mt. View had none.
