After string of wins, Seahawks at top of Heal standings
With four more wins in the book over the last week, the Boothbay Region High School Seahawks boys basketball team is currently seeded in first place in the Heal standings with a 13-1 record.
In the the most recent and competitive contest, the Seahawks had to overcome a seven point halftime deficit in a 52-45 victory over the visiting Winthrop Ramblers who came in with just two losses.
The Ramblers used an 8-1 run late in the second period as the Boothbay was held to just six points in the period. John Hepburn got the Seahawks going in the third period with a short jumper that started a 6-0 run to pull to within a point. Hepburn eventually tied the score with a hoop coming off a loose ball and seconds later turned a steal into a three-point play to give the hosts a four point lead with 2:32 left in the period.
After a jumper from the wing by the Ramblers Matt Sekerak, Julian Apponte scored on fast break for the Seahawks followed by a tip in by John Hepburn and a steal turned into a hoop by Evan Hepburn before Winthrop got a hoop at the buzzer by Sekerak to cut the Boothbay lead to five headed into the final period.
A three-pointer from the corner by the Seahawks Nick Kilgus followed by a transition basket by John Hepburn pushed the Boothbay lead to eleven mid way through the frame. Winthrop would close to within five on a three-pointer by Ben Allen with 36 seconds left before Aaron Dickinson sealed the win with two free throws. John Hepburn led the Seahawks with 25 points and ten rebounds. Andrew Hallinan grabbed five rebounds and handed out four assists.
On January 15 the Seahawks got early three-pointers from Hallinan and Kilgus as they scored the first 21 points of the game on way to a 75-30 victory over the Raiders at Oak Hill. John Hepburn started the scoring with a put back of his own miss followed by the two three-pointers. Evan Hepburn and John scored inside as the Seahawks were having their way against a zone that was no mystery as well as turning steals into easy fast break points. John Hepburn scored the last two points of the first period and the first four of the second period as the Junior was on his way to a 30 point night. Julian Aponte added 10 points for the Seahawks while Joe DiMauro pulled down eight rebounds and Andrew Hallinan dished out seven assists in the lop sided win.
Two nights later the Seahawks again came out hot as this time they scored the first 16 points on way to a 68-36 victory over the visiting St. Dom Saints. DiMauro started the scoring with a hoop inside on the first possession of the night followed by two free throws by John Hepburn and a three-pointer from the right corner by Evan Hepburn who then went coast to coast for a hoop and then turned a steal into a three-point play. Evan then assisted on a deuce by John and Nick Kilgus scored before the Saints Michael Bryant scored the final four points of the period, leaving his team down 16-4 after eight minutes
Evan Hepburn scored eight points in the second period including two three-pointers as he would finish with 16 points while John Hepburn finished with a game high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds.
On January 18 the Seahawks traveled to North Anson where they won by the exact same score as the night before, 68-36 over the Carrabec Cobras.
The Seahawks travel to Jay on Friday for a rematch with Spruce Mountain, who Boothbay defeated earlier this season in an epic 92-87 thriller in Boothbay Harbor.
