American Legion Auxiliary Veterans Suicide Awareness Fundraising Walk

Tue, 05/14/2024 - 11:30am

Consider all the Veterans who have been part of your life.  Now imagine life without them. The very sad truth is we are losing, nationally, 24 veterans to suicide each day.  In response, the American Legion has an ongoing national campaign called Be The One, which strives to educate, destigmatize asking for mental health support, and provide resources for those at risk.

As part of this program, the Boothbay American Legion Auxiliary Unit 36 will host its third annual Veterans Suicide Awareness Walkathon on Saturday, June 1 at 10 a.m. (Rain date 6/8).  This 3-mile fundraiser starts at the Boothbay Harbor Fire Station by the Library, goes through town, on to Barrett’s Park and back again. All donations are tax deductible and will go to Togus VA Medical Center to help our local, Maine veterans by further developing educational and outreach mental health programs.

This year the Auxiliary is also asking local businesses and organizations to form teams for the Walk.  They are pleased to announce that among others, groups from J. Edward Knight Insurance, the First National Bank, members of the Boothbay Baptist Church and staff from the Boothbay Regional Elementary School will be stepping up to show community support.

How can you Be The One?

Join us on our one hour walk and spread the word to others. Make a tax deductible donation to VAVS Suicide Awareness (on Memo line write Aux. Unit #36 Boothbay). Ask veterans in your life how they are doing and listen when they need to talk. Reach out when they are struggling. For urgent help: Veterans experiencing a crisis can call 988 and press 1 for mental health assistance. Counselors are available 24/7. They may also text 838255 or visit the VA crisis line website veteranscrisisline.net

With Memorial Day fast approaching, why not pay tribute to your special veteran with this walk. Hoping you can Be The One. For more info on joining the walk or making a contribution, contact Janet Clark at (603)748-9777.
