American Legion Post 36
Last week was all about looking at the successes in 2023. This week we look forward to the new year!
First, we wish for everyone’s good health and we pray for civil discourse through this election year. As the bumper sticker says, “Freedom isn’t Free,” and many of our veterans fought for that freedom, some paying the ultimate sacrifice. For those who were lucky enough not to have to go into the heat of battle, you raised your right hand and swore an oath that said you would if called. Freedom means a democratic election process that ultimately chooses our leadership. Some might question the electoral college allowing other than the majority of the voters to elect our leaders, but we have a process to change this system in this country if the majority so chooses. I pray for an election year where the candidates focus on policies and not getting into the mud slinging that has characterized the political process in recent years … make that recent decades.
I also look forward to progress in reducing homelessness in this country. Our Legion, V.E.T.S, Maine Veterans in Need (MVN), of course, focus on veteran homelessness.
One of the “Pillars” of the American Legion is children and youth. Our Post has supported Dirigo State (the old Boys State and Girls State) and the Oratorical (high schoolers competing for educational scholarships) since the Post was founded. Over the past couple of years, we haven’t had any kids from this region participating but our Americanism Officer, Chris Armstead, is working hard to ensure all eligible students are aware of these programs. In 2023 we started the Junior Shooting Program and the American Legion Baseball program. We look forward to the Junior Shooting Program attracting more students to learn about gun safety education and marksmanship, a program that encompasses the basic elements of safety, education, enjoyment and competition. The baseball team, the 36ers, had a good first year but with many of the team returning this year, we anticipate a great season. I look forward to many in the community coming out to enjoy the game and cheer on our athletes!
New in 2024 is the Legion Rowe Educational Scholarship. Our Henry Rowe was committed to education and bequeathed the funds to start this scholarship. 2024 will see the first scholarship awarded. The Post membership will select the scholarship awardees.
I am also looking forward to our American Legion Auxiliary Windjammers float in 2024. Each year, their float is amazing and in different ways honor our veterans. I have my bet on them winning first place this year!
Last year was a banner year for our bi-monthly breakfast. Without the support of our community, we wouldn’t be able to support all the programs we have or contribute to our community needs.
As I write this, I can think of so many great things to look forward to in 2024 and not enough space to write it all.
Happy New Year!
