American Legion Post 36
First, a big than you to the community for supporting the V.E.T.S. Inc. annual BBQ fundraiser! As usual, the Boothbay Region demonstrated our support for veterans! The BBQ was also a great opportunity for me to introduce Maine Veterans in Need (MVN) to the community. While MVN is a separate non-profit, we work closely with V.E.T.S. as many of the veterans the MVN helps are homeless and often we can connect them to V.E.T.S. Likewise, veterans that V.E.T.S. support often need other resources that MVN can help with. MVN thanks Ed Harmon, founder/president of V.E.T.S., for the sharing their BBQ event with us.
Last Sunday’s VA event at the South Portland Maine Military Museum was lightly attended due mostly to the rain. But, it was successful in may ways as anytime organizations that support veterans come together, we all learn more about what we each do and how we can mutually support each other. Many of the veterans who did attend where not actually “in need” but came just to learn about the VA. Most didn’t realize that other organizations would be there and that so many organizations are available that not only help veterans who are in need but also help navigate the “system” to get the benefits they have earned.
As I have previously stated, the Maine Military Museum is a must see. From their website: “The museum’s mission is to teach today’s and future generations the meaning of “Service Above Self.” Through authentic artifacts displayed in various formats throughout the museum, viewers can witness the experiences and sacrifices of past members of our Armed Forces. Museum exhibits cover every aspect of military service from the Revolutionary War to Afghanistan and Iraq. The primary focus is American Prisoners of War (POWs) from our Civil War up to the Vietnam Conflict. It is not glorifying war but is a tribute to those who have served in the military, during peacetime, and in war. It is also a place to honor those who have paid the ultimate price while serving the state of Maine and our nation over the years. [It] is a treasure trove of military history, containing items and artifacts from the Revolutionary War to the current conflicts. This expansive collection includes everything from 18th Century playing cards to an F14 ejection seat, representing every conflict in American history. Every item displayed in the museum is authentic, as historical proof is a prerequisite for being displayed.” Go to https://mainemilitarymuseum.org/ to learn more about the museum and the operating hours. As stated in the museum’s mission, the purpose is to teach today’s and future generation of “service above self,” so bring the kids and grandkids. You won’t be disappointed!
