Belfast defeats Boothbay in double OT
The Troy Howard Middle School in Belfast defeated the Boothbay Region Elementary School Wildcats, 2-1, in double overtime at Perkins Field in Boothbay Harbor to win the 2015 Busline League field hockey championship on Monday afternoon, Oct. 19.
Belfast's Kayla Payson put the winning goal in the net with 1:31 remaining in the second eight-minute overtime.
In the first overtime, Boothbay had a couple of chances to score but the shots went wide of the goal.
Troy Howard's win was its third over Boothbay this season, with all of the games decided by one goal and it was the second overtime game between the two evenly matched teams.
Chloe Arsenault scored Boothbay's goal with just over 24 minutes to play in the first half. She rifled a shot from 10 feet away on the right side of the goal and past the Belfast goalie. Boothbay led at the half, 1-0. The Wildcats did a fine job in the first half getting into the passing lanes to stop Belfast's offense.
With 6:50 to play in the game, Belfast's Hailee Lindelof tied the score with a goal in front of the net.
Belfast controlled the ball most of the second half but Boothbay was able to force the game into overtime.
Belfast, before being presented its tournament championship trophy, was presented a trophy for winning the regular season Busline League title, followed by Boothbay receiving its Busline League tournament runner-up trophy.
In a gathering in front of the benches after the awards, BRES coach Charlinda Carlson praised her team for its effort and she presented flowers to her eighth graders and assistant coach Amy Goodwin. Playing their final game for the BRES Wildcats field hockey team were Chloe Arsenault, Maddy Faulkingham, Katie Larson, Josey Smith, Hali Goodwin, Jackie Steinmetz and Ciara Pitcher.
