BHYC Junior programs compete in Portland and Christmas Cove
The sailing program had another great week out on the water with 11 new sailors joining the existing group. The Mini-Mariners class continues to be a big hit with all of the instructors enjoying working with the younger sailors.
Our racing teams attended the New England Junior Olympics in South Portland this past week. The Junior Olympics are held every year in multiple locations around the country co-sponsored by US Sailing. In Maine the event moves from North to South. Next year it will be held in the Midcoast region with Boothbay one of the top prospects for hosting the event. Hamilton Barclay and Ella Beauregard led the BHYC 420 fleet with a 4th place regatta finish. Cyrus Blake, Rath Schoenthal and Toby Clarkson had respectable mid fleet finishes in their first Opti championship regatta. First time Opti Green Fleet sailors, Arden and Piper Carlton, came back excited for their next time out on the race course.
With the racing teams gone, the sailing program took the opportunity to mix things up with the morning sailors learning how to sail on the larger Boothbay Harbor One Design boats and all of our afternoon 420 sailors learning how to fly spinnaker.
This week we're looking forward to the Mini-Mariners embarking on a new adventure and some of our newer racers scrimmaging at Sail Maine in Portland. While two of our racers head to Newport for another Junior Olympic event.
While the sailors were at it all week with fine weather the tennis program hit the courts for another great week of tennis, playing matches with Christmas Cove Improvement Association at Christmas Cove.
The BHYC team traveled to Christmas Cove by boat as yacht club tennis players are wont to do. The match with Christmas Cove was close, with BHYC taking the overall lead. Tennis Director Chantalle Lavertu said, “The Christmas Cove Improvement Association (CCIA) were wonderful hosts and we look forward to playing them again in our home match in August.” While our older players were competing at CCIA, the Junior Beginners clinic held their weekly tennis tournament. Laura Chapman won her bracket for the second time in two weeks. Sawyer Blake also placed first in his division.
The tennis staff is looking forward to the upcoming week of junior tennis, welcoming 35 players. The tennis staff is always excited to see the improvement levels of players from start to finish of every week. In the Junior Beginners class, we will have some players new to tennis never having played before. By the end of the week even those who have never played will be holding a rally and participate in our clinic tournament.
