Black Bears beat Boothbay, 22-18
Quarterback Isaiah Weston sprinted to the right pylon of the end zone on a 15-yard run that resulted in the winning touchdown as the visiting Maranacook Black Bears defeated the Seahawks 22-18 on Friday, Oct. 5.
With just 1:33 to play in the game the Seahawks had one more opportunity but fumbled away the last chance at the Black Bear 41-yard line.
This back and forth Campbell Conference affair saw three lead changes with the Seahawks appearing to seal away a victory on a 39-yard touchdown run by Xavier Downing with 8:06 left in the game that gave Boothbay an 18-14 advantage.
With the score tied at six at the break, the visitors took advantage of an unsportsmanlike penalty and a facemask penalty on the Seahawks to march 55 yards on six plays. Kyle Marand bullied across from two-yards out to give Maranacook an eventual 14-6 lead after the two-point conversion was good as well.
The Seahawks answered with a nine-play scoring drive with Nick Burge connecting with Downing in the corner of the end zone for a five-yard touchdown pass, but Boothbay still trailed after an unsuccessful two-point conversion.
The Seahawks' defense responded by stopping the Bears on three plays and forcing a punt setting up the the touchdown by Downing.
The first score of the night came on the Seahawks' first possession as they started at their own 25-yard line and marched the distance on 11 plays with Zach Vise scoring from two yards out with 3:57 left in the first quarter.
The tying touchdown for the Bears late in the second quarter was set up by a fumble as the Seahawks coughed up the ball on their own one-yard line after a Maranacook punt was downed at the two. After the fumble, the Bears took just two plays to tie the score on a touchdown plunge by Marand.
The Seahawks will celebrate homecoming as they host the defending Class D Champion Oak Hill Raiders on Friday, Oct. 12.
