Boothbay beats Dirigo, 72-66
Faced with some very serious early foul trouble, the Seahawks got some huge contributions off of the bench on opening night in a very important 72-66 victory over the visiting Dirigo Cougars.
Junior Abel Bryer finished with 18 points, 12 of which came in the first half when the Cougars could have taken control with four Boothbay starters sitting with two or more fouls. Fellow classmate Nick Gorey scored nine points in the second half, including five straight during an 8-0 run to start the fourth period with the score tied after the three periods.
The Cougars scrambled back with three free throws and a three pointer before Bryer calmly scored inside followed by a put back of his own miss by Senior John Hepburn who finished with 16 points after picking up his second foul half way through the first period. After two more free throws by Dirigo who finished with 26 made charity tosses on the night, Bryer scored again inside. A made field goal by Dirigo cut the lead to four with 1:40 left in the game but Hepburn hit of two from the line and on the next trip hit a turn around of the glass to push the lead to eight.
The Seahawks led 16-10 after one period despite having to sit Evan Hepburn as well as he, too, picked up his second foul in the first period. Dirigo used a 13-3 run early in the second period to stake to a four-point advantage. A late run led by Bryer helped the Seahawks grab a 31-30 lead at the break.
