Boothbay blanks Sacopee Valley 32-0
Boothbay football coach Ed Crocker gave his team an impromptu math lesson following the Seahawks' 32-0 pasting of the visiting Sacopee Valley Hawks on Sept. 28 at Sherman Field. Crocker recounted the point totals allowed by the defensive unit in the previous five games (41, 26, 13, 15 and 0).
“I wanted to remind them why we are successful, and it’s our defense. That’s the way it was last year, and this season,” Crocker said.
In the first two games, the Seahawks allowed 77 points and lost both contests. But the Seahawks allowed only 28 points in the last three games and put together a three-game winning streak.
Boothbay is in fifth place in the Class E Heal point standings. The Seahawks are approaching a very important segment of the season with upcoming games against No. 2 Dirigo next week followed by games against No. 3 Camden Hills (4-1) and No. 4 Maranacook (3-2) in consecutive weeks.
“Our defense thrives on hitting. When we hit somebody they feel it, and remember it. And I think this takes a toll on opposing offenses during games,” he said.
The Boothbay defense was so dominant it also contributed to the scoring. With the Seahawks already holding a commanding 18-0 lead in the third quarter, the defense scored on a safety after middle linebacker Nicholas Morley knocked the ball out of Sacopee Valley quarterback Brandon Capano’s grasp near the Hawks’ goal line. Another Boothbay defender kicked the ball, and cornerback Stephen Bennett landed on it.
“Our defense is really working well and playing great,” Bennett said. “Coach inspired us with a great speech to start the game and we played great tonight.”
In the first half, the Boothbay offense moved the ball up and down the field in scoring three touchdowns. Near the end of the first quarter, quarterback Hunter Crocker capped an 11-play drive with a one-yard quarterback sneak on fourth and goal. In the second quarter, Boothbay touchdowns were scored on passing plays. Crocker connected with Michael Hollowell on a 26-yard pass and Morley with a 32-yard pass.
Hollowell scored the Seahawks’ fifth and final touchdown with a 36-yard run in the fourth quarter.
On Oct. 5, the Seahawks resume their rivalry with former Campbell Conference foe Dirigo in Dixfield.
“So far they have handled every team they’ve played so it will be a great test for us,” Coach Crocker said. The Friday night game begins at 7 p.m.
