Boothbay crushes Winthrop
The Seahawks boys basketball team wrapped up the regular season and the number one seed in the upcoming Western Maine Class C Tournament with an up tempo, 64-44 victory over the Winthrop Ramblers on Friday, February 6 at jam packed Porter Memorial.
After Winthrop jumped out to a brief 5-2 lead, the Seahawks scored the next 14 points, including three pointers by Evan Hepburn and Julian Aponte to give the host a 16-5 lead five minutes into the game. Evan Hepburn would add a fast break hoop as the transition game was big part of the Boothbay success. He would end up with seven in the period on his way to a game-high 20 points in what appeared at the time to be his last home game. But the seniors will get one more chance to play at Porter Memorial as the MVC championship game originally scheduled to be played at Thomas College on Monday has been shifted to Boothbay Harbor on Thursday, February 12.
Leading 18-13 at the end of the first period, the Seahawks started the second period on an 11-2 run as Evan Hepburn and Aponte again each had a three-pointer. The zone defense that caught Winthrop off guard the first time the two teams met was just as effective this time around as the Ramblers had just 17 points on the board midway through the second period.
Even though the Seahawks enjoyed a comfortable 15-point lead after three periods, they were committing too many turnovers and the offense started to sputter. The Seahawks only scored 10 points while John Hepburn, Evan Hepburn, and Abel Bryer all picked up their third personal foul. But Winthrop failed to take advantage as they only scored six points in the period and trailed by 19 after three periods.
Besides the 20 points by Evan Hepburn, Julian Aponte and Jacob Leonard added 10 points apiece.
