Boothbay defeats Winslow in overtime
It was something the Boothbay lacrosse team expected to happen all season: Goalie Page Brown was going to miss a game. Despite missing the team’s standout goalie, the Seahawks won their ninth game on May 28 defeating Winslow 6-5 in Class B North action.
Brown had a previous commitment resulting in midfielder Missy Davison replacing her in the cage. Davison, who previously played goalie in middle school, made three saves. Defensively, Boothbay had few problems, but the offense struggled.
Boothbay trailed 4-2 at halftime before winning 6-5 in overtime. Seahawk midfielder Kate Friant scored the game winner one minute and 41 seconds into overtime on a free position shot. Friant scored twice as did midfielder Helen Hamblett for the Seahawks. Boothbay tied the game on consecutive goals by midfielder Lincoln Hamblett, with 17 minutes and 21 seconds remaining, and Helen Hamblett, who scored a minute later.
Winslow retook the lead with 12 minutes remaining on a Sabrina Jandreau goal. Friant scored the last goal in regulation with eight minutes left. The Black Raiders nearly won in the final minutes, but had two goals disallowed for crease violations.
Boothbay is in fifth place in the Heal point standings with a 9-2 record. Winslow is in twelfth place with a 2-9 record. Despite Brown’s absence, it seemed the Seahawk defense was in capable hands with Davison.
“Page is fine. She had a commitment over the weekend and we knew early on Page wouldn’t be available Saturday,” said Boothbay coach Donna Jordan. “Alexis is our backup goalie and had a fine week of practice in preparation for the game.”
Boothbay has one remaining regular season game against Lincoln Academy in Newcastle on Wednesday. The top six Class B North teams avoid a preliminary playoff game. The Seahawks will likely play their first tournament game on Wednesday, June 8.
