Boothbay edges Monmouth
The Seahawks boys varsity edged the Monmouth Mustangs, 46-44, at Monmouth on Saturday. Playing Monmouth for the second time this season, the Seahawks won the first game 62-56 and this game was just as close.
After one period the Seahawks led 10-8. The pace was deathly slow as the Seahawks were in a 2-1-2 zone and Monmouth was being very patient. Part way thru the second quarter, the Seahawks changed to man-to-man defense. The pace picked up some, particularly for Monmouth as they outscored the Seahawks 14-8 to take a 22-18 half-time lead.
Boothbay regained the lead in the third quarter, as Carter Babcock had six third quarter points. There were numerous lead changes in the final period, but as it often does in close games, it came down to foul shooting, and the Seahawks were 5 of 7 from the foul line in the final minutes. Monmouth had a 3/4 court heave at the buzzer that missed.
The Seahawks are 7-6 with 5 games left in the regular season.
Carter Babcock had 13 points and Kyle Ames 12 for Boothbay. Hunter Richardson had 19 and Travis Hartford added 10 for the Mustangs. Austin Campbell was the leading rebounder for the game with 11, and he also drew two charges.
“We struggled offensively most of the game, but we played well defensively down the stretch," said Coach I.J. Pinkham.
