Boothbay girls take first, boys second at Hall-Dale meet
As the regular season comes to a close and the championship season beckons, the Boothbay Region High School track teams appear to be in peak condition.
At Hall-Dale on May 13, the Lady Seahawks dominated the competition and the boys team came up a close second to Hall-Dale. The BRHS women scored 122 points to win the meet, followed by Winthrop, 89, Monmouth, 83, Hall-Dale, 57 and Richmond, 13. For the boys, it was Hall Dale, 116, BRHS, 107, Monmouth, 75, Winthrop, 66 and Richmond, 8.
“Both teams had an excellent night at Hall-Dale on the 13th. The girls team won easily while the boys finished in a close second to host team Hall-Dale,” Coach Nick Scott said. “It was a really impressive victory for the girls' team and a great effort for the boys as well. The really encouraging news is that we are getting quite fit and look to be peaking at the right time of the season.”
For the girls team, the dynamic duo of Morgan Crocker and Nell Anthony again led the scoring. With 28 and 26 points, respectively, Crocker and Anthony delivered just shy of half of the team’s total score. Interestingly enough, for Crocker, the meet could have been considered an off night as it was the first time all season she has not won the four events she entered.
“Individually, both Morgan Crocker and Nell Anthony had great nights,” Coach Scott said. “Morgan, despite feeling under the weather, was able to win both hurdle events and still placed second in the long and triple jumps. Nell Anthony also won two events, the discus and shot, while placing second in the javelin, and third in the long jump.”
Speedster Sophia Thayer also delivered another superior performance for BRHS at Hall-Dale. Thayer won both the 1600m and 3200m events and was the third highest team scorer with 16 points. Sinead Miller and Angie Perkins each racked up 10 points at Hall-Dale.
For the boys, Benn Scully and Abel Bryer were the top point earners for the night, with 17 points each. Scully placed first in the 1600m and second in the 800m and still had enough left to contribute some serious speed to both the 400 and 800m team relays (BRHS took second in both).
“In an extremely exciting race, Benn Scully pulled out a close victory in the 1600m over freshman teammate Joey Paolillo,” Coach Scott said. “Headed into the fourth and final lap of the event, Scully and Paolillo trailed Hall-Dale standout Chris Pomerleau by over 20 meters but were both able to overcome him just before crossing the finish line.”
At Hall-Dale, Bryer won both the javelin and shot put events, placed fifth in discus and is currently the boys team’s season high scorer.
“Sophomore Abel Bryer continues to have a tremendous season,” Coach Scott said.
The Seahawks head to Hall-Dale on Tuesday, May 20 and to Cony High School on Friday, May 23 to finish the regular season.
