Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Column: Plans underway for Preakness Party
The first event of the 2014 season was held last Saturday night in the form of the annual Kentucky Derby Party!
Over 50 members attended and enjoyed mint juleps among other libations. The mint syrup for the concoctions was made by Chef George, who used over a half-pound of mint. Sumner Lipman was in charge of entertainment and California Chrome was the star of the day.
The event was so successful that plans have now been made for a Preakness Party, which will include a dinner as well.
Most of the moorings are now in, and the first few units of the main docks are in as well and being used by the Junior Program’s High School Sailing Team. The water is still frigid, but the young sailors use dry suits provided by BHYC, so if they “go over” the dangerously cold water does not harm them.
Peggy Chapman reports that the ladies lunch group is growing in attendance every week and that they will soon be meeting at the club once again, May 28 to be exact.
Another harbinger of opening activities comes with the notice that the annual Spring Work Day will be on Saturday May 17. Please plan to show up at 8 a.m. Many hands will make quick work of the project list that Jim Matel has prepared.
The casual seating furniture looks brand spanking new thanks to the skills of Maggie Newton and Sandi Hakanson. They have selected and used a fabulous blue and white nautical pattern, which gives a very special new feeling to the 15-year-old furniture. Thanks to both of them for a major job well done.
That means that the annual opening pot luck supper will be that night and Sandy Gillespie will be coordinating the event so please call her at 207-633-0084 to sign up for attending and to get your pot luck offering listed. You can also email Sandy at sandbug@gwi.net. The event is chaired by Alice and Andy Mutch, who report that Chef George will bake a ham and be present to carve and serve it.
The Mutches also report that even if you cant make the work day, you can still attend the supper!
