Boothbay lacrosse scores eighth win of season
Boothbay lacrosse had its game against Lawrence May 25 well under control. The Seahawks scored their fourth goal midway through the first half and led 4-1. Boothbay appeared on its way to an easy win when disaster struck. Seahawk midfielder Hali Goodwin received a red card for an illegal hit and was disqualified from the game. Lawrence rebounded from its slow start and pushed Boothbay throughout the remaining 38 minutes before succumbing, 12-10.
The Seahawks’ win improved their record to 8-2. Boothbay was in fifth place in the Class C Heal point standings at press time. Despite losing a key defensive player, Boothbay’s offense chugged along scoring enough points to hold off the Bulldog rally.
“Hali is one of our best defenders so playing a man down really hurt us on defense. Our defense broke down, and they got back into the game,” said Seahawk midfielder Sydney Meader.
Boothbay filled the defensive void by relying on several freshmen and one first-year player. Senior Emily Amaral considered playing lacrosse last season before opting for softball. This season her softball career ended when Boothay was unable to field a team. “Lawrence was a lot tougher than expected. They are versatile, and know how to turn the ball over,” Amaral said.
Meader led the team in scoring with five goals and one assist. Other Seahawk scorers included Jackie McLoon with four goals, Hannah Cola with two goals and Chloe Arsenault with two goals and three assists.
On May 23, Boothbay found itself on the wrong side of a 12-10 score losing to Mount Ararat in Topsham. Meader was the top scorer with three goals and two assists. Cola scored three times. McLoon and Arsemault had two goals apiece.
Boothbay concludes regular season play this week with two road games. On May 29, Boothbay travels to Winslow for a game against the Black Raiders, and on June 1, the Seahawks travel to Gardiner for a game against Gardiner/Hall-Dale.
