Boothbay loses to Dirigo, defeats Lisbon and Monmouth
The Boothbay Region High School boys tennis team lost to Dirigo, 4-1, on April 30 but rebounded with wins over Lisbon, 5-0, and Monmouth, 3-2, on May 2 and May 5, repectively.
The weather conditions in Dixfield on April were cold, with rain imminent.
The #2 and #1 singles matches were nearly stopped, as rain began to coat the courts.
Duncan Drapeau and Vicente Haro-Hortelano came very close to winning their #2 doubles match, taking the first set 6-2. One of the their opponents, Aighadan Weishnar, a senior, was exceptionally tall and difficult for at net, Coach Mark Gorey said.
“Vicente, however, brings height and reach for our doubles team, and he really enjoys net play,” Gorey said. “Duncan is skillful off of both forehand and backhand sides and brings consistency to their team.” Gorey called the pair’s camraderie exceptional.
“Ben and Collin, back from a trip to France after nearly two weeks away from tennis, played with heart in their respective matches,” Gorey said. “Daniel in his second set against a player with a table tennis forehand slice, started to surge in the second set by focusing on his opponent’s backhand.”
Nick Gorey is now 2-0 in #1 singles play, winning against Jeremy Grignon, a senior who won 1st team-All Star status last year.
