Boothbay soccer drops 2-1 decision to Winthrop
The Boothbay girls soccer team suffered another close loss by a score of 2-1 when it traveled to Winthrop Sept. 15. The Seahawks finally broke a nearly two-game scoreless drought with a long goal by Tori Morin in the closing minutes of the hard-fought contest. Unfortunately it was a too little, too late.
“We were never able to get a good rhythm going in the second half,” said Seahawks head coach Ben Powell after the game. “There were a few good chances in the first half which were not converted.”
This is the third game this year that Boothbay has lost by one goal and it came on the heels of a 1-0 shutout by Mt. Abram the previous night.
Powell is hoping the team’s fortunes turn around when the Seahawks host Carrabec on Sept. 20 at Clifford Field. He expects the game to be a physical affair.
“It should be another tight match,” said Powell. “Carrabec won last year’s matchup 1-0 in the final seconds of overtime. It was one of the most physical matches of the year and extra precautions will be taken this year to ensure player safety on both sides of the ball.”
