Boothbay soccer drops nailbiter
The Boothbay Region High School girls soccer team suffered a frustrating 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mt. Abram on Sept. 13 at Clifford Field in Boothbay.
The Seahawks carried much of the action in the second half but were stymied by a suffocating Mt. Abram defense which would continually bend but never ultimately never break. The first half was a back and forth battle with neither team generating many scoring chances until Mt. Abram broke through with a goal just before halftime. The shot was a high arcing lob which Boothbay goal tender Jackie McLoon settled under but missed as the ball rolled slowly into the right corner of the net. Despite this, the Seahawks must have liked their chances.
After a few halftime adjustments, the Seahawks began to dominate the action with the majority of the last 30 minutes played on the Mt. Abram side of the pitch. Boothbay striker Reagan Cola continued her stellar play by deploying a full range of nifty , ball control moves and speedy footwork to create numerous scoring opportunities. The defense was led by defender ReAnna Heino, who led a solidly aggressive back line attack once the action swung in the Seahawks’ favor. The relentless Boothbay attack had Mt Abram on its heels and a game-tying goal seemed inevitable. Drawing frustrated gasps from the 30 or so onlookers, striker Hannah Cola hit the top of the goal after a beautiful feed from Angie Perkins. The Seahawks continued to have chance after chance but were denied each time.
“We played well, created a lot of great chances, which we normally capitalize on but just couldn't find the back of the net,” said Boothbay coach Ben Powell. “A lot of credit goes to Mt. Abram's keeper who made some great saves.”
The loss dropped the team to 1-4 on the young season while Mt. Abram improved to 1-3-1. The Seahawks will travel to Winthrop on Sept. 15 for their next scheduled game.
