Boothbay teams beat Wiscasset at home
Boys' game
The Boothbay Region High School boys varsity basketball team closed out the regular season that saw them only lose one game with a 72-58 victory over the Wiscasset Wolverines on Thursday, Feb. 7 at Porter Memorial.
With a 17-1 record, the Seahawks finished as the top seed in the Western Maine Class C Tournament with a quarterfinal tilt scheduled for Monday February 18, 8:30 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center against the winner of a Wednesday night preliminary round game that faces St. Dom's at Wiscasset.
With the trip to the quarterfinals, it will be the 17th time in 18 years Seahawk head coach I.J. Pinkham has advanced his club to this point.
In the season finale win over Wiscasset, senior Anthony DiMauro led the way with 29 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists in his final home game.
DiMauro scored eight of the first 11 points for Boothbay as they jumped out to an 11-5 lead. After Wiscasset cut the lead to two on a put back by Travis Padilla, the Seahawks got hoops by Evan Hepburn, Lincoln Simmons, and DiMauro on an inbounds play to lead by six after one quarter.
A pair of 3-point plays early in the second frame kept the Wolverines within scratching distance until a 6-0 run, started by a hoop by Steven Barter, pushed the lead to 10. Another put back by Padilla and three points from Dale Peaslee cut the lead to seven at the break.
Closing in on his 1000th career point, DiMauro scored the first five points of the third period and Andrew Hallinan added a 3-pointer as the lead grew to 13.
When these two old rivals meet you can normally throw the records out the window and the sense of a possible upset continued to brew as the Wolverines reeled off a 10-2 run to pull to within five on a put back of his own miss by Dylan McMahon.
Now sensing the urgency of the situation, the Seahawks went back top work as DiMauro scored from the lane, Joesph DiMauro connected from just inside the arc and Hallinan scored on the break. After a hoop by Wiscasset, Anthony DiMauro added a 3-point play and John Hepburn scored on a fade away.
The Wolverines kept the deficit within 10 points for most of the final quarter, with the Seahawks finally pulling away, outscoring their guests 10-2 over the final three minutes.
The Seahawks are scheduled to face Dirigo on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Mountain Valley Conference Championship game in Augusta.
Game Over: Seahawks win 72-58.
Third Quarter: Seahawks lead the Wolverines 54-46.
Second Quarter: At the half, Boothbay leads 31-24.
First Quarter : Seahawks are up 17-26.
Girls' game
The Lady Seahawks wrapped up the regular season with a commanding 64-40 win over the Wiscasset Wolverines February 7. Besides besting their rivals, the Lady Seahawks honored their seniors, Alex Clarke, Allison Crocker and Sarah Caron, who have together scored 501 points combined this season.
During the game the senior trio dumped in double digit points with Crocker's 14, Caron's 13, and Clarke's 12 points respectively.
In the first quarter Caron kick-started the offense with a thunderous three pointer which helped build Boothbay to a 25-5 lead after 8 minutes of play.
In the second half Boothbay continued their assault on Wiscasset which showcased Abby McLellan doing what she does best: scoring on fast breaks in transition. In the third quarter alone, McLellan scored 11 points to put Boothbay up by 27 points headed into the final quarter.
Throughout the game, Wiscasset never gave up, with the help of Kasey Cromwell keeping the Wolverines aggression high. But by the end of 32 minutes of play, Boothbay's defense was too much for the Wolverines who struggled to get the ball inside and grab rebounds.
“I think we ended on a good note, and I couldn't have done it with a better team,” Allison Crocker said after taking part in the Senior Night festivities following the game. Looking back on her career, Crocker said “As a freshman getting one win was a big deal. Now getting all the wins is what we aim for.”
The Lady Seahawks ended their regular season with an impressive 16-2 record and will not only head into the tournaments ranked number one, but they will have the opportunity to compete in the Mountain Valley Conference Championship in Augusta.
“I came in my freshmen year and we won two games,” Clarke said. “So, now, going to the MVC game, going in as first place, it's incredible.”
Boothbay's opponent in the MVC Championship is Spruce Mountain (17-0), one of two teams that defeated Boothbay by four points early in the season.
“I think we feel really positive,” Caron said anticipating the matchup. “After seeing (Spruce Mountain) and playing them before, we should come out with a win.”
The Lady Seahawks will have three days before the MVC Championship game which will tipoff at 7:30 p.m. at the Augusta Civic Center, February 11.
Game Over: Seahawks win 64-40.
Third Quarter: With one quarter left to play, Boothbay hangs onto the lead 52-25.
Second Quarter: At the half, Boothbay is ahead 32-13.
First Quarter: Lady Seahawks lead 20-5.

In addition, both teams celebrate Senior Night as three girls and four boys will be honored prior to each game.
