Boothbay upsets Old Orchard Beach in OT
The Seahawks are headed to Augusta.
In a stellar second half display of offense and defense, the Boothbay Region Seahawks, seeded 15th, upset second-seeded Old Orchard Beach, 82-75, in overtime to advance to the Class C South quarterfinals at the Augusta Civic Center next week.
Trailing 31-17 at halftime, and by 19 points (36-17) early in the third quarter, coach Dan Hallinan’s team outscored the Seagulls, 27-19, in the third quarter to cut OOB’s lead to 50-44. Boothbay went on a 10-0 run in the fourth quarter and held a four-point lead heading down the stretch. A layup by Seahawk senior Ashton McLellan with about four seconds to play sent the game into overtime, 68-68.
With the game tied at 75-75 in overtime, Kayden Ames hit a layup and Boothbay went five of six from the line to seal the victory.
Matt Sullivan led Boothbay with 21 points, including five 3-pointers (four in the pivotal third quarter), followed by Ames with 20, Gryffin Kristan with 16 (6 of 9 FT), and Lucas Hardwick with 15 (11 fourth quarter points). Ashton McLellan came off the bench and added seven points, including 5 of 8 free throws.
Landen Johnson led OOB with 20 points, followed by Ricky Delisle with 16, Shilo Thao with 13 and Brady Croteau with 11.
Boothbay will play seventh-seeded Mt. Abram on Monday, Feb. 21 at 5:30 p.m. at the Civic Center. Mt. Abram advanced with an easy win over Richmond.
