Boothbay wrestlers compete at Lincoln Academy, Mountain Valley
The Boothbay Region High School wrestling team lost a close match to Lincoln Academy and were defeated by Medomak Valley High School at Lincoln Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
BRHS initially tied Lincoln but lost in the ninth tiebreaker because the host team had more near falls during the meet. Medomak won its match against BRHS, 48-27.
For Boothbay, Howie Carter had a fine night, going 3-0 with three pins. Also, Gabe Purin had both of wins on pins. Antonio Maulolo and Killian Miller each went 2-0, with each getting a pin and a forfeit win. Jude Alamo, Nick Labonte and Lucas Leighton were each 1-1, with Alamo winning by decision and Labonte and Leighton getting their wins by forfeit.
“I was very impressed by their performance,” said BRHS Coach Allan Crocker of his team's effort. “If Tony Hammond had been able to wrestle at 195 (the MPA would not let him until Thursday), we would have beat Lincoln Academy by 12 because he pinned their 195 wrestler in exhibition.
“For having a wrestling team that is less than a month old, they performed great and showed the can compete with some of the more established teams.”
At the McDonald's Tournament at Mountain Valley High School on December 14, Antonio Maulolo had three wins and finished in third place in his division, the highest ever finish for a Boothbay wrestler, according to Coach Crocker. Howie Carter had two wins and the team finished third among the Class C teams competing. Over 20 schools from around Maine competed.
