Boys tennis team defeats Winthrop
First singles player Nick Gorey remains undefeated at 5-0 on the 2014 season and the Boothbay Region High School boys tennis team picked up another win, 4-1, over the Winthrop Ramblers on Monday, May 12 at BRHS.
Gorey won his match over Alex Chamberland, 6-2, 6-2. Second singles player Daniel Drummond defeated Kevin Chamberland, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
“I was particularly impressed with Dan Drummond’s comeback, after he lost the first set,” said Coach Mark Gorey. “The first set ended on a controversial line call, which he needed to put behind him. He began to focus on the opponent’s backhand, and Dan frequently came to net, strategies which won the next two sets for him.”
Winthrop defaulted the #3 singles match, so Ray Perry could not play for Boothbay on Monday.
Boothbay's first doubles team of Collin Thompson and Ben Betts lost, 6-4, 7-6, (7-2), to Nick Schlosser and Sabastian Pettitt but the second doubles team of Duncan Drapeau and Vicente Haro-Hortelano defeated Winthrop's River Coron and Giuseppe Sansome, 6-1, 6-1.
"Duncan and Vicente continue to have success, due to their complementary playing styles, with Vicente assertive at net and Duncan, a backcourt mainstay, not allowing balls to pass," said Gorey.
Nick, Daniel, and Ray will compete in this upcoming Saturday’s state singles tournament prelims at the Buker Courts in Augusta. Players winning all of their matches in this tournament will advance to the State Round of 48 tournament, in which singles players from class A, B and C schools compete to be the state champion.
