BRHS grad shows freshman runner the way around cross country course
A 2015 Boothbay Region High School graduate is helping a freshman make tracks around the cross country course this season. Howie Carter, a standout wrestler and football player, is serving as 14-year-old Gavin Carlson’s eyes. Carlson has competed in scholastic cross country since sixth grade. He is partially visually impaired and needs guidance during the 3.1-mile races.
Carter has limited experience in road races. He is best known for his accomplishments on the wrestling mat. In 2015, Carter finished second in the Class C State Championship 160 pound class. In 2014, he was ranked as high as second in his weight class. And in 2013, he finished fifth in the state.
But he never ran cross country for Coach Nick Scott until this year. “Coach Scott still gives me a hard time about not running cross country,” recalled Carter. “But I’m here now as a guide. I serve as Gavin’s eyes and take him around the course making sure his footing is secure and he doesn’t trip or fall.”
Carter’s route to becoming a cross country guide came via Oklahoma. He tried college before deciding to pursue a different future. He received an email from BRHS Athletic Director Allan Crocker about his interest in serving as Carlson’s guide.
“My only experience in running is I ran the Lobster Roll and did OK,” he said. “Allan thought I was good with kids, so he asked me.”
Carlson's best time is 24:24. Carlson describes Carter as helping him improve his results. “I like running and Howie is good to run with. He helps with my form and makes it fun for me."
Carter is also having a good time in his first year as a cross country runner. “At times, I feel more like a team member than a coach. I’m enjoying it and Gavin keeps me on his toes when he decides to take off. At times, it’s a challenge keeping up with him.”
Carter's future may include joining the military. He plans on meeting with a U.S. Naval recruiter in the near future.
