BRHS winter athletes, coaches honored at awards night
Special awards presented to Seahawk boys basketball coach I.J. Pinkham and the 20-2 Boothbay Region High School girls basketball team were the highlights of the annual Winter Sports Awards banquet on Tuesday, March 8.
State Representative Stephanie Hawke, who is also a local school committee member, presented sentiments from the state legislature to the girls basketball team for a successful season and for being state runner-up, and to Coach Pinkham for garnering the most victories of any high school boys basketball coach in the history of the state and for being inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.
Pinkham was also presented with a trophy from George Conant, executive secretary of the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches for the past 25 years, in recognition of Pinkham’s reaching the 600-win plateau and for becoming the state’s most successful boys high school basketball coach in terms of wins. Conant, a former girls basketball coach at Dirigo, Greely and Falmouth, said he had first met Pinkham when he taught and coached at Buckfield, before Pinkham moved to Boothbay, where he has coached for 40 years. Pinkham also served as secretary for the Maine Association of Basketball Coaches several years.
Prior to Hawke’s presentations, BRHS Athletic Director Allan Crocker spoke about the accomplishments of each winter sports team – j.v. and varsity girls basketball, j.v. and varsity boys basketball, girls swimming (no boys participated this year), wrestling and boys and girls Nordic skiing.
Crocker also highlighted the accomplishments of several individual athletes and their post-season recognition. The athletes include:

Each coach spoke about their season and presented plaques to individuals.
Crocker thanked several groups for their support of the teams and players throughout the season, especially the Boosters Club which helped supply the beverages and desserts for the banquet, and concluded the evening by presenting a plant to Trish Grover, who “puts in countless hours and generally stays under the radar. She is like another mother to our entire girls basketball team. I know my own daughter still talks about how great this person is and I am sure that will remain true for years to come.”
And Bar Clarke brought home the Boosters Club’s Seahawk bench (courtesy of Larry Brown and Jim Roberge) as the club’s raffle winner.
