Brown saves Seahawks victory
Goalie Page Brown has stood tall in front the Boothbay lacrosse’s cage all season. But the lanky sophomore was never taller as she was May 12 in Boothbay’s 8-7 victory over Oceanside of Rockland at Sherman Field.
Brown turned back 18 Mariner shots including the final one with six seconds remaining preventing a game tying goal. Brown credited her defense for creating difficult shots for the Mariner attackers.
“The defense played really well in front of me. They communicated well by handing off the cutters. Oceanside put a lot of pressure on us in the second half, but we stuck together,” she said.
Boothbay forged ahead 6-3 early in the second half only to see Oceanside begin dominating the action. Three unanswered Mariner goals tied the score at six with 19 minutes 27 seconds remaining.
Evy Case was one of players who switched from offense to defense during the match. She describe Oceanside’s checking (knocking the ball out of the stick’s cradle ) as being difficult to manage.
“They (Oceanside) really makes it tough to control the ball. They’re probably best checking team we’ve faced,” Case said.
The Mariners seemingly used their checking ability to dominate most of the second half. The action remained in Boothbay defensive zone for most of the half. Oceanside tested Brown and her defensive front.
Seemingly, Oceanside’s offensive patience was a good defense. Oceanside’s goalie recorded only one save for the match.
While Oceanside was dominating the second half time of possession, Brown said her team’s defensive poise ultimately won out.
‘We did a good job staying focus because Oceanside played a very disciplined game,” Brown said. “They moved the ball well, stayed patient and found their cutters.”
Boothbay’s leading scorers were midfielder Kate Friant and attacker Jackie McLoon with three each. Attacker Sydney Meader had two goals.
On May 15, the Seahawks continued their winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Noble High School in North Berwick. The Seahawks and Knights traded six goals a piece until four minutes in the first half. Attacker Evy Case scored the first of her two goals giving Boothbay a 7-6 advantage. Midfielder Kate Friant followed scoring her first of two goals giving Boothbay an 8-6 halftime lead.
In the second half, the stingy Boothbay defense turned outright miserly Saturday afternoon preventing any Knight goals. Goalie Page Brown and her defensive unit front of Nicole Clarke, Alexis Welch, Emma Pearce and Lilley Harris shut the Knights out in the second half.
Boothbay is 5-2 and is in seventh place Class B North Heal Point standings. The Seahawks’ next game is at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 20 against Camden Hills in Camden.
