Cobras spoil softball opener
The Lady Seahawks softball team lost its season-opener at home to the Carrabec Cobras, 15-2, on Monday, April 22.
Boothbay hung tough (trailing 5-1) until the sixth inning when the Cobras plated 10 runs and put the game out of reach. After a team is losing by 10 or more runs after the fifth inning and doesn't score enough runs to come within single digits, the mercy rule is imposed and the game is over.
Seahawk senior Allison Crocker had a good day at the plate, getting three hits, one run batted in, one run scored and a stolen base. Nicole LaBrecque had Boothbay's other run batted in with a single in the sixth inning.
However, Crocker, the starting pitcher for Boothbay, gave up 25 hits to the Cobras (1-0), including five hits (three doubles and a triple) by Brooke Lewis and five by Ashlee Knight.
Carrabec capitalized on numerous Boothbay errors in the sixth inning.
“We gave up in the sixth inning,” said first-year Lady Seahawk Coach Heather O'Brien. “One of the main things we have been working on this season is not to allow errors. The girls did a great job of doing that in the first five innings, but mentally, they let go in the final inning.”
“We need to get over some of the hurdles and bring home some wins,” said O'Brien.
Boothbay will play at Dirigo on Wednesday, at Madison on Friday and host Monmouth on Monday at 4:30 p.m.
