Cold temps didn’t stop Plungers
This year's Penguin Plunge event on January 1 drew some very good numbers. Between 30 and 35 people went into the water, according to Meagan Hamblett of the YMCA, which sponsored the 12th annual event.
The weather was cold and raw, but the sun encouraged attendees to go forward into the frigid water. Led by Andy Hamblett and Bill Haney, the participants ran and dipped their feet and legs in the ocean off Murray Hill Road in East Boothbay. The event started at 11 a.m. sharp, with folks running into the water. There were some brave double dippers, too.
“It will probably be over by 11:02 a.m.,” said Boothbay Fire Chief Dick Spofford at the start.
Sure enough, he was pretty close.
The event is held yearly to promote the Y's Second Grade Learn to Swim program. The attendees that signed up and paid the $25 registration fee received a T-shirt that commemorates the event.
If you have interest in attending next year's event and taking the plunge, mark your calendar; it is always on New Year’s Day.
