End of the season
The closing weekend of the 2012 season featured the annual meeting and the commodore’s reception. Members gathered in the morning to hear about the state of the club, the tentative plans for the future and the results of the various races throughout the summer. Will Jacobs reported that the number of young sailors in the program increased this summer to 190. He thanked all of the officers and the Helmings for their continued support and assistance.
Rear commodore Nancy Custer Carroll enlightened us on the various races this summer and thanked those who have served as race committee. Annette DeJarnett reported on the new and successful social events and hoped to add more next summer. Our membership stands at 250 families and has continued to increase. Reports were given by the various ad-hoc committees about the Seguin Race, Arts and Crafts, Dock rules, the new kayak rack and the formation of an archives and history committee to be chaired by Jack Bauman.
The nominating reported that the new slate of director will add Linda Murphy, Chip Baker, Russ Jackson and Oliver Phippen. Russ Jackson will be taking over the much-valued position of chair of buildings and grounds. Bill Messmer who has been in this position for six years was given a standing ovation for his work during the renovations. Dave Smith will be joining the flag officers as rear commodore.
Later in the day we were again back at the club for our closing reception. The evening was lovely and most members were outside to enjoy the sunset. Nancy Custer Carroll presided over the awarding of the trophies for the various races held during the summer. The most anticipated award, “The Golden Shackle,” was unfittingly given to the same individual who also took honors for the best racing season.
We thank the Boothbay Register and Kevin Burnham for their attention to this column.
