Falcons soar past Lady Seahawks
The Mountain Valley Falcons edged the Boothbay Region High School Lady Seahawks, 3-1, in a hard-fought field hockey game at Perkins Field September 11.
Following a moment of silence in honor of the lives lost during the attack on America on September 11, 2001, the visiting Falcons and Lady Seahawks began testing each other out for the first 18 minutes of the game.
At the 12:13 mark, Falcon junior Lindsay Marston scored off a rebounded save in front of the net to give Mountain Valley (2-1) a 1-0 lead. Three minutes before half-time, sophomore Lexi Duguay gave the Falcons a 2-0 advantage, rifling a shot into the net from about five feet away from Boothbay goalie Erica Eames. Eames made seven saves in the game.
The first 15 minutes of the second half was dominated by Mountain Valley. Duguay scored her second goal of the game at the 19:42 mark of the 30-minute half, putting the visitors ahead, 3-0. After a timeout at the 13-minute mark, Boothbay revved up its game and controlled play the rest of the way.
Getting three more shots at Falcon goalie Kassie Thibodeau (six saves overall), Boothbay scored with just under eight minutes to play. Junior Shaw Pinkham, after dribbling into the scoring circle from about midfield, passed to fellow junior Nicole LaBrecque, who tapped the ball into the net.
“We played better than we have lately,” said Boothbay’s first-year coach Kristin Smith. “We played them evenly for half of the first half and controlled the game the last 13 minutes.”
Boothbay (0-3) is scheduled to play next at home Friday against Spruce Mountain (2-0-1) at 4 p.m.
Omitted from the roster listing in the preview article of the team and season was freshman Nicole Clarke. Also joining the team this week was freshman Willow Beavis.
