Many attended the Gingerbread Spectacular at the Opera House in Boothbay Harbor, held December 15-16.
This year there were 40 entries, some of which featured the Boothbay Harbor footbridge, Boothbay Region Elementary School, a Hobbit hole and a cathedral.
This year's judges were Howie Barter, Liz Evans, Brad Hastings, Dickie Perkins and Kit Sherrill. The awards were announced during Friday night's Dough Ball, where more than 150 were in attendance to enjoy food, music and the gingerbread creations.
Hundreds of people stopped by to view the Gingerbread Spectacular entries over the weekend, reports Cathy Sherrill, executive director of the Opera House. Below is a list of winning entries:
Most Spectacular – Carly Crewell for “O, Come All Ye Gingerbread”
Best Traditional Gingerbread House Design – Carly Crewell for “Illuminated English Cottage”
Most Creative – Susan Brackett for her Rocking Horse and Sock Monkey
Most Creative Youth – Will Perkins for his Penguin scenes
Largest – The Lunch Ladies at BRES for their depiction of BRES and Sleighs
Most Appetizing – Caitlin Brackett for “Sugar Plum Fairy Retreat”
Best Holiday Spirit – Michaela Marden for “Candy Shop”
Best Holiday Spirit/Youth – Matthew Connelly for “Santa's House”
Most Obsessive Compulsive – Vi Eastman for “Christmas Home”
Best Representation of a Local Landmark – Arden McSwain and Chase Brown for “Merry Barn”
Most Hilarious – Matt Hurley and Under Currach Tavern for “Santa's Little Helper”
Most Hilarious/Youth – Reilly Sullivan and Olivia Paolillo for “Tropical Vacation”
Best Landscaping – Lisa Perry for “Hobbit House”
Most Ingredients Used – the Ed Harrington Family for “Save St. Andrews”
The Booby Prize – Millie Santiago for “This Isn't What You Think It Is!”
Almost the Most Spectacular – Pandy Dickinson for the “Opera House”
The People's Choice Award is not determined until the end of the Spectacular and is based upon votes and bids. The 2012 People's Choice Award went to Kevin Kiley for his log cabin.
